Home » Blog » Iowa Haunts: An In Depth Look

IowaHauntedHouses.com recently sat down with Grant Davidson of Thrashers House of Terror, to discuss what's new at Thrashers House of Terror for the 2024 Halloween Season!

What's new at Thrashers House of Terror for 2024? Do you have any new rides, attractions, or special features that Haunt Seekers should know about?

The entire attraction is new for 2024! One of the unique aspects of Thrashers House of Terror is that we have four weeks after Labor Day to completely rebuild the attractions from the ground up, making each year a fresh experience. So, even if last year’s design wasn’t your favorite, this year’s layout and features will be entirely different. Since our building hosts multiple events throughout the year, we have the flexibility to create something new and thrilling each season.

What are you most excited about for the 2024 Halloween Season?

We're thrilled to be back this year, continuing to bring Halloween excitement to Southeast Iowa with our haunted attraction. We're also excited to share the property with another fantastic event, the Midwest Haunted Rails, organized by our partners at Midwest Central Railroad and Midwest Old Threshers. It’s a family-friendly Halloween experience that complements the thrills we offer, making it a destination for everyone. You can find out more about the Midwest Haunted Rails at https://www.oldthreshers.org/midwest-haunted-rails/.

What differentiates Thrashers House of Terror from other local haunts in Iowa?

What truly sets Thrashers House of Terror apart is that each year, the entire attraction is completely redesigned. Every season offers a brand-new experience, so you can always expect something different and exciting when you visit. This commitment to innovation keeps our haunt fresh and unpredictable, making it a must-see event for thrill-seekers in Iowa.

How long has Thrashers House of Terror been in business? Can you tell us a bit more about Thrashers House of Terror's history?

Thrashers House of Terror has been thrilling visitors since 2007. Our journey began when another haunted attraction, which had been on the property for two years, decided not to return. We saw a great opportunity to create something new and have been building on that foundation ever since. Over the years, we've continued to evolve, offering fresh and terrifying experiences each Halloween season.

What's your favorite experience since opening Thrashers House of Terror?

It's hard to pick just one favorite experience because every year is different. The thrill of creating a new and unique attraction each season is incredibly rewarding. Seeing the reactions of our visitors, especially when they experience something totally unexpected, is what makes it all worthwhile. The variety and constant change keep things exciting for both us and our guests.

How long is a typical haunt experience at Thrashers House of Terror from start to finish?

A typical haunt experience at Thrashers House of Terror lasts about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how lost you might get along the way! We send groups into the attraction every 90 seconds, so each visit is an intimate and immersive experience.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how scary would you say Thrashers House of Terror is? Why?

It's tough to put a specific number on it because everyone’s fears are different. For instance, I personally love clowns, so they don't scare me at all, but snakes? That’s a different story. The scares at Thrashers House of Terror are designed to tap into a variety of fears, so how intense it feels really depends on what gets under your skin.

Does Thrashers House of Terror's property have any real haunted history? Do you have a spooky encounter you'd like to share?

No, there isn’t any real haunted history tied to the property. While we create plenty of spooky encounters for our guests, the chills you feel are all part of the carefully crafted experience, not from any real ghosts!

What inspired you to open up a haunted attraction? What's your favorite part of the business?

The inspiration came in 2007 when we saw an opportunity to add a new attraction to Mount Pleasant and enhance the Midwest Old Threshers organization's offerings beyond the annual Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. My favorite part of the business is seeing the community come together each year to create something special that brings people from all over to experience the thrill.

How has new technology (i.e. animatronics, special props, etc) helped you to enhance Thrashers House of Terror?

One of the best parts of running Thrashers House of Terror is the ability to evolve with the times. New technology, like animatronics and special props, allows us to continually improve and enhance the experience for our guests. We love experimenting with these advancements to make each year's show more immersive and thrilling than the last.

Can Thrashers House of Terror accommodate large groups? How many people can experience Thrashers House of Terror together as a group?

We can accommodate groups, but to ensure the best experience, we limit each group to 6 people at a time. This size allows everyone to fully immerse themselves in the attraction without feeling crowded, ensuring that each scare lands just right.

Does Thrashers House of Terror offer any special deals, discounts, or coupons?

No, we don't offer deals, discounts, or coupons. However, we encourage you to keep an eye on our social media channels, where we occasionally host giveaways and other special promotions.

Anything else you'd like to let us know about Thrashers House of Terror?

I’d like to encourage everyone to explore the many haunted attractions across Iowa. It takes all of us working together to make the haunt season truly special and to keep this incredible industry thriving. So, while we’d love to see you at Thrashers House of Terror, be sure to visit other local haunts too—it’s all part of the fun!
